Description
Without Reserve

An important and extremely atmospheric original oil on canvas by Roy Nockolds (1911–1979). Depicting the legendary Aston Martin DB3S No. 5 driven by Graham Whitehead, braking hard into Arnage curve in the rain at night, on the heels of the Lotus 15 driven by Graham Hill. Signed by the artist in the lower right corner and dated 1958. Framed with a reeded Art Deco-style, black lacquered frame with linen slip and glazed.

This painting was commissioned by Graham Whitehead after his result at Le Mans in 1958. It resided in his and his half-brother Peter’s collection until the mid-1990s, when it was acquired by the consignor. A paper label accompanying the piece indicates that it was no.18 in the Whitehead brothers’ private art collection.

Provenance: Commissioned by Graham Whitehead in 1958, following his famous 2nd place finish at Le Mans. Whitehead Collection from 1958 to the mid-1990s (evidenced by attached Whitehead inventory label). Whitehead Collection until acquired by the consignor.

Canvas size: 24 x 29.5 in. (61 x 75 cm). Overall size: 37 x 32 in. (94 x 81 cm).
